By an outward sign ls meant some thing Which we can perce1ve by one or other of our senses, and which makes known to us something else which we do not perceive. Thus if we see footprints we know that someone has passed; or if we see smoke coming out of a chimney we are certain that there is a fire in the house. In like manner the pouring of water or the outward washing in baptism is a sign of the inward cleansing of the soul from original sin.
