It is a popular fallacy among racing sailors that you need to know the rules. You do need to know your rights and obligations on the water – but the rules can always be looked up afterwards. The rules in practice looks at the key situations that occur repeatedly on racecourses, from the view point of each helmsman in turn, and summarises what each may, must, or cannot do. Armed with this information you will have the confidence to exploit your rights to the full, on the water and in the protest room.
