Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Romantic Story of the Puritan Fathers and Their Founding of New Boston and the Massachusetts Bay Colony: Together With Some Account of the Conditions Which Led to Their Departure From Old Boston and the Neighbouring Towns in England

Next the Normans - whom the Saxon fenmen were the last to resist 1 - set up a small stone church, and this in turn made way for the present noble edifice, commenced on the same site in I 309 and carried over and around the older church, which was not removed until the new building was completed. The story is that the founda tions of St. Botolph's Church were of timber and woolpacks. This, in part, is no doubt literally true; at the same time it is meant to express, in metaphor, that the trade in those commodities produced the wealth which enabled the people to erect the church. But no mere material prosperity would have inspired such a design: it was due also to the religious enthu siasm which had been aroused by the preaching of the Friars.
