Publisher's Synopsis

The Ring And The Book is a poem by Robert Browning, published in 1868. It is a dramatic monologue that tells the story of a murder trial in Rome in the 17th century. The poem is divided into twelve books, each of which is narrated by a different character involved in the trial. The central figure is Guido Franceschini, a nobleman who is accused of murdering his wife, Pompilia, and her parents. The other characters include the Pope, the lawyers, the witnesses, and the judges. Through their different perspectives and biases, the reader is able to piece together the truth of what happened. Browning's use of language is complex and dense, with frequent allusions to classical literature and philosophy. The Ring And The Book is considered one of Browning's greatest works and a masterpiece of Victorian poetry.Do you see this Ring? 'Tis Rome-work, made to match (By Castellani's imitative craft) Etrurian circlets found, some happy morn, After a dropping April; found alive Spark-like 'mid unearthed slope-side figtree-roots.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
