I have to acknowledge the courtesy of the Editors of The Times, The Fortnightly Review, The Poetry Review, The Windsor Magazine, The Blue Magazine also the Editors of The Book of France and The Book of the Homeless, in permitting me to include in this volume the various poems which have already appeared in their pages. The poem on the first battle of Ypres, as I have already stated in The Fortnightly Review, was not in any way suggested by the Angels of Mons fable, but by a private letter. The writer, a young man of high character and intelligence, was acting as interpreter at the time of the battle. He questioned a considerable number of prisoners as to the cause of the apparently ih explicable withdrawal of the Germans on three occasions.
