Publisher's Synopsis

This study deals with the "Other/other" in selected postcolonial plays. The work is divided into four chapters. The introduction traces the development of the notion of the "Other/other" in philosophy and postcolonial critical theory, especially in the writings of Frantz Fanon, Edward Said, Homi Bhabha, and Gayatri Spivak. Chapter one deals with Derek Walcott's Dream on Monkey Mountain, Wole Soyinka's Death and the King's Horseman, and Girish Karnad's The Dreams of Tipu Sultan. Chapter two deals with Sa'dun Al-Obeidy's "Jisr Al-'Adu" and Bnayan Salih's "Sirat S", Abdur-Rahman Ash-Sharqawi's Ma'saat Jameela, and Abdur-Rahman Haqeeq's Az-Zingee Al-'Abyadh. Chapter four compares these plays and sums up the findings of this study.
