Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 33: January 1959
In Paul Leicester Ford's edition Of The Works of Thomas Jefferson (volume VI, page 23) there may be found a letter containing the following intriguing words: Mr. Henry at the present session made an unsuccessful attempt to get a portion of the revenues of Wm. Mary transferred to hampden-sydney.
The letter dated December 14, 1789, and addressed to William Short, shows to what lengths the early trustees went in order to insure the stability of the youthful institution! Our current efforts to procure funds are strenuous, but we assure our good friends in Williamsburg that we no longer have designs on them.
