Publisher's Synopsis
In early 1843, Alison Stephen Ray, barely ten years old, climbs aboard a covered wagon along with his parents, Presley and Dicey, and eight of his siblings. Leaving their Randolph County, North Carolina home behind forever, they begin the long, arduous journey northward along Daniel Boone's rugged, primitive Wilderness Road, determined to begin a new life in Indiana, some 600 treacherous miles away. Every worthwhile goal in life comes with a cost, and every dream pursued involves sacrifice. Alison and his family tragically discover this when, early on along their journey, Dicey dies unexpectedly. Then, shortly after the family reaches their destination in Boone County, Indiana, Presley also dies, leaving young Alison and his siblings orphaned and all alone in a new land. This is the true story of one family's incredible history of triumph and tragedy, challenge, opportunity, and amazingly, survival.
