Publisher's Synopsis
This new book is part history and part historical gazetteer of waggonways and coal roads in the North East. It includes the local rivalries and economics that drove development of the coalfield and with it the waggonway, which became the railway. Biographical sketches of those involved pepper the narrative, reminding the reader of just how many people were involved in developments that led to the powered railway long before the fame of George Stephenson obscured their important work.
