Publisher's Synopsis
This proceeding is the product of the 1990 Triennial Conference which is a conference series held every three years, alternating on each side of the Atlantic, originally between the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) - United Kingdom. In the recent past, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineers (CSCE) joined the conference. The 1990 conference was expanded even further to include, for the first time, The Institution of Engineers, Australia (IEAust), The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), The Institution of Engineers of Ireland (IEI), and The Institution of Professional Engineers of New Zealand (IPENZ). The primary purpose of these gatherings has been to enable the most senior members of the participating organizations to formally meet and exchange ideas on the profession on a multi-lateral, and near global standpoint. The format of the conference series has been to arrange a conference on a theme of prime importance, which is topical, broad and of significant concern to the participating societies. The theme of the 1990 Triennial Conference is: ""The Quest for Quality - An Engineer's View on Responsibility and Liability."" The discussion topics include: definition of quality, responsibility and liability; traditional roles of the owner, designer, and constructor; quality impacts of evolving systems to plan, design, build, and operate projects; and, role of the legal system.
