Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Psychological Review, Vol. 5: Sociality and Sympathy, an Introduction to the Ethics of Sympathy

Sympathy being in each and every instance a case of feeling, it tends inevitably to express itself. This expression is exhib ited primarily in the lines of the face and movements of the head and body. Such diffusion (bain) of feeling which is the phenomenon of emotional expression, exists to a greater or less extent in every sympathy. It is the one order of observable activity, ' by which we detect the presence of feeling, hence also the presence, under the conditions given, of sympathetic feeling.
