Excerpt from The Professorship of English Language and Literature at University College, London
I beg leave to apply for the Professorship of English Language and Literature at University College, now vacant through the retirement of Professor henry morley. Born in 1836, I have now been studying English Literature for upwards of Thirty years; have been continuously printing texts of it for more than Twenty years; have been publicly teaching it for Ten years; and have been a University Examiner in it for Five years. It was at King's College, in the winter of 1857-8, that I was first drawn to the close and continuous study of English Literature by the lectures of Professor morley. Twenty years afterwards, in 1878-81, I had opportunity of professional training under Professor morley at University College; first as Lecturer, and then as Assistant Professor, -of English Language and Literature.
