In summary, then, and in very broad outline, my argument so far has been that Afrikaners during the first two centuries of settlement in southern Africa were, on the whole, Calvinists only in name, had no sense ofa manifest destiny, but were, by and large, unsophisticated folk who reacted to the challenges of their context in an ad hoc manner and by means of a very literalist interpretation of the Bible.
