Publisher's Synopsis

As the fifth novel in Trollope's Palliser series, this story focuses on Plantagenet Palliser, now Duke of Omnium, and his struggles as Prime Minister of England. The novel explores the tensions between personal integrity and political maneuvering, as Palliser's marriage to the strong-willed Lady Glencora also comes under strain. Trollope critiques the moral compromises and pressures of high office, depicting a world where ambition and loyalty are constantly tested.

Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) became one of the most successful, prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. Some of Trollope's best-loved works, known as the "Chronicles of Barsetshire," revolve around the imaginary county of Barsetshire; he also wrote penetrating novels on political, social, gender issues and conflicts of his day.
