Before she could walk, Jess Mollitt knew she wanted to dance, and when she gains a place with the famous Burton Girls dance troupe, appearing on the West End stage, it seems her dreams have finally come true. But when a family outing ends in tragedy, killing her mother and leaving her father a broken man, Jess is forced to give up the career she loves and look after her younger siblings.
Life now is a far cry from the glamorous existence she has left behind. As Jess juggles managing the newsagents her father is no longer capable of running and caring for the three children so cruelly robbed of a mother, she has no time to deal with her own grief. Her one saving grace is her friendship with neighbour Don Day, who provides a shoulder to cry on and perhaps - he hopes - a lasting love.
