Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Poultry Argus, Vol. 4: Devoted Exclusively to Poultry Interests; March, 1876

A correspondent asks us to give a simple remedy for the Roup. The best plan we know of is to provide your fowls with well-ventilated dry roost ing houses, where they will not be exposed to draughts, or to sudden extremes of heat, cold, and dampness. Proper precaution in this direction will do away with the necessity for simple remedies for the cure of this scourge. However, when your chickens once have the disease, some remedies are absolutely necessary. The first thing to do is to remove the diseased fowls from the poultry yard, and disinfect roosting pens, drinking-vessels, -c., as the disease is highly contagious. In light at tacks a few doses of castor oil, and washing the head with salt aid vinegar, will usually effect. A permanent cure. In more aggravated cases the following remedy may be used.
