Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Poets and the Poetry of the Century

The Editor has to acknowledge his obligations to the several members of the Tennyson family and to Mrs. Brotherton for information given, the use of letters, and the correction of data; also for generous permission to select from the poems of Mr. Frederick Tennyson and the late Rev. Charles Tennyson Turner. He has to express his regret, however, that owing to the refusal on the part of Messrs. Macmillan Co. (to whom he is otherwise largely indebted), to give the necessary permission, he has been unable adequately to represent the Laureate. As Lord Tennyson's poems are easily obtainable in one volume, and are, in their entirety, in the hands of all lovers of poetry, the omission is perhaps less important than might have been the exclusion of many a less accessible if less gifted poet. The Editor would record his gratitude to the late Sir Francis Hastings Doyle and to Professor Blackie, for permission to quote from their poetry, and to Messrs. Macmillan Co. For the confirmation of their per missions; also to Messrs. Macmillan for permission to.
