Publisher's Synopsis
In presenting this medieval Christian play the author has attempted to present a text as uncluttered as possible by the later additions and alterations present in the manuscript. In the case of this play it could only be done up to a point. The ending for the Passion play is lost, and although it is still possible to disentangle this play from other material in the second part (Passion II), there is no way of knowing how or where in Christ's death and resurrection the story ended. In this book therefore, the editor has printed Passion II as it is in the manuscript, but has tried, by means of an extensive commentary (in introduction, notes and Appendix 4) to show as far as possible what was and was not part of the play.;The first part of the play (Passion I), however, is a different matter altogether. Here the additions are obvious and the structure and meaning of the play can be clearly seen. In the text of Passion I which follows the additions have therefore beeen removed and are printed as Appendices 1 and 2.
