Publisher's Synopsis
It is 1940 and three Guernsey children - Edward and William Dorner and their friend, Ruth, find themselves in England as evacuees. Ruth has an Ormer shell, taken from a tranquil beach the day before, and in the coming years she clings to it - a reminder of her island home. Later, the shell assumes great significance in her growing love for one of the brothers. Edward plans to re-open the family hotel after the war. William wants money and an easy life. Ruth has marriage in mind. Ambitions, jealousy, tragedy and love bind the three lives together.
