Publisher's Synopsis

The Open Window is a short story written by British author Ernest Temple Thurston and first published in 1913. The plot revolves around a young man named Framton Nuttel who has recently moved to a new town and is visiting a family acquaintance, Mrs. Sappleton. Mrs. Sappleton's niece, Vera, tells Framton a story about how her aunt's husband and two younger brothers went hunting and never returned. She claims that Mrs. Sappleton leaves the window open every evening in hopes that they will return. As the story progresses, Framton becomes increasingly nervous and uneasy, and when Mrs. Sappleton's husband and brothers suddenly appear through the open window, he flees in terror. However, it is revealed that the men are not ghosts but had simply been out hunting and had returned home. Vera had made up the story as a prank to scare Framton. The Open Window is a classic example of a short story with a twist ending and is often studied in literature classes as an example of effective storytelling. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
