Under the head of the Catechism the various good Explanations of it deserve honorable mention, particularly those which confine them selves to a homely interpretation of its terms and to the citation of pertinent Bible passages in support of its teaching.
In the second place, sound sense, as well as the apostolic practice, justifies the Church in employing compends of Bible History as a means of teaching the truth of Christ. For the Christian religion rests upon facts of Sacred history and cannot be understood apart from them. Moreover, what Christ taught does not carry its full appeal to the heart unless it comes to us energized by His person ality and life, and attested by its in?uence upon the nations and characters of the Bible era.
