Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Onlooker, Vol. 1: A Literary Journal of Independent Critical Opinion on Public Affairs; Toronto, April, 1921
As a demonstration of belief (we had almost written, of political orthodoxy) the late election will mark an era in history. It is either the first round of a tremendous struggle with forces antagonistic, and bitterly antagonistic, to the received way of looking at things or it is the death of all alien aspiration. The day may indeed come when the foreign-born, led by the Irish, Germans and Jews, may venture to throw down the challenge to the native-born for control and seek to subvert the doctrine that private property for which a clear legal title can be shown is inviolate, but for the moment the conviction that the Declaration - which in essence is British - is sacrosanct is absolutely triumphant all along the line. America was never more American than at this hour, for the solid South is broken.
