Publisher's Synopsis
Founded in 1842 as a line from Edinburgh to Berwick, the North British grew to become the largest of Scotland's old railway companies. Across eight eventful decades it had a profound effect on social, commercial and industrial life - not just in Scotland - as the NBr had lines in Northumberland also. The company had to deal with internal problems and power struggles as the economy expanded unevenly and society changed. Companion to his existing volumes on the Highland Railway and the Caledonian Railway and a forthcoming volume on the Glasgow & South western Railway David Rosshas produced a detailed history of the NBR, the company that dominated railways in the east of Scotland until the 1923 Grouping. Besides many contemporary photographs, the book also includes a timeline and area maps.
