""The Noble Laird of Thornyburne"" is a Northumbrian border ballad written in three fyttes (sections) and published in 1855 by Saunders and Otley. The story follows the noble laird of Thornyburne, who falls in love with a beautiful maiden named Ellen. However, Ellen's father refuses to give his blessing to the union, and instead arranges for her to marry a wealthy but cruel knight. The laird and Ellen continue to meet in secret, but their love is discovered by the knight, who challenges the laird to a duel. In the ensuing battle, the laird is mortally wounded, but manages to kill the knight before dying himself. Ellen, grief-stricken, dies soon after.
