It began to be understood that light was not a distinct substance sent forth in radiating lines, but a vibration or regulated motion, in a universally diffused medium of the rarest kind, a motion analogous to that vibration of the air which reports itself to the ear as sound. By this discovery, one of the great supports was stricken from an erroneous mode of conceiving.
