This novel takes place in the 16th century, and is set in France and Italy. Emily, like all the heroines of the Radcliffe, faces the adversities and disasters caused by Montoni with the force of rationality, having momentarily succumbed to superstition. The persecution of the evil Montoni takes place in the castle of Udolfo, where multiple supernatural phenomena take place: vague strange figures, a ghost on the battlements, mysterious sepulchral voices.
