But, gentlemen, I can declare before you, before this honorable Court, yes, in the face of heaven, that I am not prompted by such motives. I feel that I am about to dis charge a duty, a solemn, a sacred duty to the glorious old Commonwealth which has extended to me her kind hospi tality, and which is to see to it, that her laws be respected, and that any violation of them be followed by condign punishment.
