Publisher's Synopsis

The Monk is a gothic novel written by Matthew G. Lewis in 1796. The story is set in Madrid, Spain, during the 16th century and follows the life of Ambrosio, a respected monk who is admired for his piety and preaching. However, his virtuous facade is shattered when he succumbs to temptation and becomes involved in a series of sinful and immoral acts, including rape and murder. As he becomes more consumed by his desires, he becomes increasingly isolated and paranoid, eventually leading to his downfall. Alongside Ambrosio's story, the novel also features a number of other subplots, including the love affair between a young nun and a nobleman, and the supernatural occurrences that take place within the monastery. The Monk is considered a classic of gothic literature and is known for its controversial and provocative themes, including sexuality, religion, and the corrupting influence of power. The burst of transport was past: Ambrosio's lust was satisfied; Pleasure fled, and Shame usurped her seat in his bosom. Confused and terrified at his weakness, He drew himself from Matilda's arms. His perjury presented itself before him: He reflected on the scene which had just been acted, and trembled at the consequences of a discovery. He looked forward with horror. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
