Publisher's Synopsis
Actress Caroline Fawley and her children have been set up in a grand house in the Yorkshire village of Marsham by her lover, supermarket owner Marius Fleetwood. Her television work makes her something of a celebrity, and she relishes her role as 'mistress of Alderley', even agreeing to host the village fete. The children are happy and successful, especially her eldest daughter, an opera singer. Everything seems perfect - until a young man looking remarkably like Marius appears on her doorstep. Within a few weeks Marius has disappeared - and then a body turns up...
