When Cameron first learned of the reoccurrence of his mother's cancer, he had just initiated a divorce from his wife, Melissa, and was struggling with Tourette's disease. Inge had had enough of chemo with her first bout with cancer and wanted him to accompany her on an adventure. She proposed walking the Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile network of pilgrimage paths in Northern Spain and France that traverse the Pyrenees Mountains.
Cameron felt the timing could not be worse with the turmoil in his own life but consented to go with her. He knew he was easily irritated by her and had conflicts with her from his childhood. He felt she did not really see him nor listen to him.
