Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Master's Field: A Series of Sonnets
In saying this, I am in a de cc - but in a slight degree only - condemning myself. W en I first began to write sonnets, I did not see as clearly, as I saw soon afterwards, that the actual poetry of the composition depends very much on its structural perfection. Any one who compares the Sonetti of Petrarch with the Canzoni will see how rigid rules and multiplied rhymes may, in some hands in crease instead of diminish beauty and strength. The best sonnets to be found in English, German and Spanish, con form strictly to the Italian type; they have two sets only of rhyming words in the first eight lines, or major system, and two or three sets only of rhyming words in the tercets.
