Repatriated after months of severe psychological and physical torture, the marine finds himself in a recuperation ward at the Army Hospital in San Francisco. Efforts to diagnose and treat his strange behavior, triggered by the playing of the song "Autumn Leaves," is undertaken to defend against a new form of warfare.
His fiancée makes every effort to aid in the marine's recovery by joining him in Washington, DC, where a sudden windfall and position at the Bureau of Standards leads to his involvement in international intrigue and espionage.

High suspense leads to an emotional finale as an aged woman recalls a long ago prophesy, asking the reader to decide how it relates to modern-day America.
