Tony, a journalist who has left his wife and job, becomes intrigued with the mysterious calls made by Peter Krasko over the phone outside his bedroom in a Marylebone lodging-house. When Krasko makes a hurried escape from the police, Tony takes beautiful refugee Nina under his wing, but he can never entirely fathom the hold that the sinister Mr Winston has over her. Was it Winston who used the French night-club singer Louise to lure Tony to a nightmare encounter at the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch? How has Tony become so deeply enmeshed in violence on both sides of the Berlin Wall?
