Pearl was getting ready for her new year at school. Her mother had bought lots of new storybooks for her. Pearl liked books with large pictures. She liked to watch cartoons on the television and draw and paint with felt tip pens. There were some things, of course, that she disliked, such as when grown-ups made her take a nap after Sunday lunch, or when people kept secrets from her. As you can see, though, Pearl was an ordinary little girl. One day, however, strange things started to happen around her.
