The Luck of a Luckless Man, follows the dark and comedic tale of Ulf Friedrich, a small, ageing man, with big dreams.After returning home, from his New York vacation, Ulf begins to rue the mundanity of his life. Rainy Dusseldorf, where his wife (Ursula) treats him badly, her elderly aunt (Helga) treats him worse, and his carpentry job cripples, both, his body and his mind.When Ulf's hunger pangs are snubbed by Ursula (when she gifts the fries, he thought were his, to his nemesis aunt Helga), he skulks to the kitchen. There he vents his frustrations, and begins to daydream about New York and his late mother Margarita. However, upon ceasing his daydreaming, he has a farcical encounter with Lady Luck. She, visiting on the back of a forgotten Lotto ticket, which he discovers while preparing a sandwich. When Ulf checks the Lotto numbers, in the newspaper, he is astonished to learn the truth, and, within this revelation, sees the ending of all his woes. But, as is the fickle nature of Luck, things don't go quite as planned.
