The longfellow memorial associa tion having accomplished its purpose, voted to dissolve at a final meeting held in 1922 at the house Of its President, Dr. Charles W. Eliot. The idea of an Association for the purpose of providing a Memorial to Henry Wads worth Longfellow was first given public ex pression a few days after the 'death Of the poet, in a letter published in a Boston news paper of March 30, 1882. Five days later, on April 4, a meeting was held to consider the formation Of such an organization at the house of Arthur Gilman, 5 Waterhouse Street, Cambridge.
