Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Livestock Situation, Vol. 20: February 1941
The extent to which marketings of cattle and calves for slaughter will increase in 1941 over 1940 will depend chiefly upon how large a number of breeding stock producers hold back for herd-building purposes. Barring un favorable weather conditions, the increase in breeding stock during 1940 will be reflected in a substantial increase in the 1941 calf crop over that of 1940. And even though producers should hold back breeding stock in about the same number as they did in 1940, total slaughter of cattle and calves in 1941 could exceed that of a year earlier by as much as 4 or 5 percent. If there should be no increase in cattle numbers during 1941, total slaughter of cattle and calves during the year could easily exceed 26 million head, which would be one of the largest on record.
