Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Life of Sir Thomas Pope, Founder of Trinity College Oxford: Chiefly Compiled From Original Evidences, With an Appendix of Papers, Never Before Printed

In the mean time, a want of materials might have jufily been here alledged, in ex tenuation of an objection To confiantly urged ag'ainft works of this kind. It will readily be granted, that to record the lives of men who have adorned their country by menu ments of munificence, is a tribute indifpen fably due to public merit, and which cannot without public injuflice be witheld. But to difcharge this duty even imperfectly, and by thofe means, however inadequate, which the utmolt exertions of diligent enquiry can' afford, is lefs unpardonable than to neglect it entirely. When we cannot recover a per fecft portrait of our friend and our bene faétor, we muft be contented with a few faint outlines. Abundance only implies te jeétion; and where but little can be col leéted, it is necefi'ary to retain every thing. We muft acquicfce in anecdotes of incon fiderable confequence, while thofe of more importance cannot be procured.
