Till a comparatively recent date, it is true, the materials for anything approaching to a satisfactory biography had not been brought within the reach of the historical student. The Livy of Portugal, as he has been called, J 050 de Barres, had handed down to us some incomplete details from the scattered papers of a contemporaneous historian whose collected work has, as we shall presently see, recently been made public property.
