As to the letters which are quoted in the volume, I have to explain that the names of those to whom they were addressed have been given, for the most part, only where this was rendered necessary by the allusions which the letters contain.
In a life so crowded with interests and activities, some facts have doubtless been overlooked. A few of these, which appeared too late to be put in their proper chapters, have been gathered together in an Appendix.
In the quoted material the round marks of paren thesis and their contents belong to the original; what is enclosed in queue brackets has been added.
