Excerpt from The Life of Archbishop Laud

Ship, according to the custom of the Col lege and in June, 1594, proceeded to the degree of Bachelor of Arts. In 1596, and 1597, he suffered severely from indisposition. In 1598, he was made Master of Arts, and was appointed reader in Grammar for that year; at the end of which, he was again visited with sickness. In January, 1600, he received Deacon's orders from Dr. Young, Bishop of Rochester; and was ordained Priest by the hand of the same Prelate, in April, 1601. By this time he had become an orphan having lost his father in April, 1594, and his mother in November, 1600 1.
