The study here offered is that of a mind almost equally divided, and in a manner almost unique, between the fervours of theology and the inspirations of art. In regard to the first, it will be noted that although his conclusions as to the essentials of Christian Faith were almost identical with those of 'the Broad Church, ' the path by which he arrived at them started from what must appear a widely distant point, while his views as to social worship, Church government, and other minor but important questions, hindered him from attaching himself to that or any other religious denomination.
