Giotto di Bondone, known mononymously as Giotto and Latinised as Giottus, was an Italian painter and architect from Florence during the Late Middle Ages. He worked during the Gothic/Proto-Renaissance period.
Since almost all artists of that time were commissioned by the Church, Giotto spent his life painting magnificent frescos for churches and chapels. He became the most famous painter of his time and opened the artistic doors to the splendid Renaissance to come.
