Publisher's Synopsis

The Life and Remains of John Clare is a biography written by J.L. Cherry about the English poet John Clare. The book explores the life of Clare, who was born in 1793 in a rural village in Northamptonshire, and his journey as a poet. It covers his early life, his time spent in a mental asylum, and his later years. The book also includes a collection of Clare's poems, letters, and journals, which provide insight into his personal life and his creative process. Cherry's biography offers a comprehensive look at the life and work of John Clare, shedding light on the man behind the poetry and the impact he had on the literary world. All that was possible was done for Clare at the house of Dr. Allen, one of the early reformers of the treatment of lunatics. He was kept pretty constantly employed in the garden, and soon grew stout and robust. After a time he was allowed to stroll beyond the grounds of the asylum and to ramble about the forest. He was perfectly harmless, and would sometimes carry on a conversation in a rational manner, always, however, losing himself in the end in absolute nonsense. In March, 1841, he wrote a long and intelligible letter to Mrs. Clare, almost the only peculiarity in which is that every word is begun with a capital letter. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
