Amber Brenin is as new to the world as a twelve-year-old can be. Severely autistic and living in a care center, she barely even gets to connect with other people, including her father Robert, a geologist. When an expedition at sea threatens to separate them for months, Robert smuggles his daughter along on the voyage. They're soon separated anyway when a strange piece of crystal from Robert's lab causes their whole team to stumble through a portal to another dimension.
Now Amber is stranded on Rôkshena, a fantastic but war-torn world where no one understands her condition.
