The construction of electric works by the municipality of K oto challenges attention because of the fact that they represent one of the first examples of hydro-electric-power plants in the world. The works are owned and managed by the municipal govern ment of Kyoto, and supply electric light and power to all parts of the city. Kyoto has a population of and it is one of the three principal cities in Japan: it is famous for its Fine Arts, for its old temples, and for the beautiful scenery of the mountains by which it is nearly encircled as in an amphitheatre.
