After the great king Odin's death, the throne of Asgard has been given to Loki by his brother Thor, who has chosen not to rule despite being next in line to the kingship. Loki, though full of hatred and rage from the recent deaths of his wife and sons, proves himself a worthy ruler - and is soon informed that royal decree dictates he must take another wife and sire heirs to the kingdom that is prospering under his rule.
Enraged that a replacement for his beloved has been forced upon him, he treats his new Queen - a royal captive who has grown up in the palace under former queen Frigga's tutelage - with unfettered cruelty and withholds his affection, though not his dark and brutal attentions.
