Publisher's Synopsis

This annotated version of The Island of Dr. Moreau includes the full original story, an in-depth literary analysis and an author's biography. Enjoy this clever must-read by one of the world's most famous authors. You should also check out our publisher's page for a wide array of other classics, including other work from H. G. Wells. Widely considered the father of science fiction, Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) was an innovative and prolific writer across many genres. His most famous works - such as The Time Machine, The Invisible Man and The War of the Worlds - are considered modern classics. The son of a professional cricketer and a lady's maid, H. G. Wells (1866-1946) served apprenticeships as a draper and a chemist's assistant before winning a scholarship to the prestigious Normal School of Science in London. While he is best remembered for his groundbreaking science fiction novels, including The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, and The Island of Doctor Moreau, Wells also wrote extensively on politics and social matters and was one of the foremost public intellectuals of his day. I have been reading all the classics lately. Unfortunately this is yet another disappointment for me. The story is slow and boring. I am finding that the great literary works of the past are mostly dull. While I can appreciate the creativity of this story for its time, I feel it is another story that is held on a pedestal for unknown reasons. Certainly with all the creative and bright authors in the world there are better stories to force our students to read to gain a true love for reading. I can see why young adults choose to never willingly read again after high school. I can appreciate this story but feel it is well past its time.
