Foreign affairs have therefore not received their proportionate share of emphasis in the study of American history. Such treatment as has been accorded to our foreign relations has tended rather to accentuate the more dramatic episodes of politics and diplomacy, and to neglect, if not to ignore, economic and commercial forces which have played a very significant role in international affairs.
