The station lies 111 the general course traveled over in the spring by the numerous migratory bands of sheep in going from the desert or lowland ranges to the high mountain pastures in the Cascades, and again in September on their return to the lowlands. As a result the region had been severely overgrazed for a number of years and the vegetation was in a badly depleted condition, much of it having been completely exterminated.
